5 FUN Ways To Be Heart Healthy

Sick of being told to eat more oatmeal or get to the gym? Sure, fiber is important, exercise is necessary, but healthy habits don’t have to be boring ones. Here are a few fun ways to keep your cardiovascular system strong and your heart happy!

Hug someone!

A 20 second hug can increase oxytocin; decreasing blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels. Cortisol, a stress response hormone, can lead to excess inflammation and fat deposits.

Eat more (raw) chocolate

Raw cacao is rich in heart protective antioxidants as well as “love chemicals” phenylethylamine and anandamine and “feel good” tryptophan (the precursor to serotonin). It is also a good source of magnesium, which helps to lower blood pressure and regulate heart rhythm.

Why not try making your own hot chocolate, black bean brownies or chocolate avocado mousse.

Roll in the hay!

Not only is sex great exercise, raising heart rate and blood flow, it can also reduce pain, improve immunity, lower stress and help you sleep.

Enjoy a bowl of berries

Who doesn’t love a bowl of fresh, colourful berries bursting with flavour? And because they’re full of antioxidants berries help protect the arteries from free radical damage. For extra blood-sugar-balancing benefit sprinkle with cinnamon.

Throw a dinner party

Motivate yourself and your loved ones with a heart healthy menu full of anti-inflammatory omega 3s. How about grilled salmon and an arugula salad with toasted walnuts.
