Check Out This Q&A to Understand What the Global Trust Logo Means
What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics (a type of aquaculture) is the cultivation of fish and plants together in a re-circulating, closed loop ecosystem.
If it is Organic, why not use the Canada Organic logo?
Organic Aquaculture is not currently within the scope of the Canada Organic Regulation. The Canada General Standards Board (CGSB) published a voluntary organic aquaculture standard in 2012. Producers who adhere and are inspected to this standard are not allowed to use the Canada Organic Logo.
What is an Organic Aquaculture producer to do?
Organic Aquaculture producers can certify their products to the voluntary organic aquaculture standard through an independent certifying body that can assess their compliance. Once the organic production is certified the producer may legally make an organic claim and use the seal of their certifier. That is why you see the Global Trust Organic logo on Aqua Greens products.
Who is Aqua Greens?
Pablo Alvarez and Craig Petten founded Aqua Greens out of a desire to provide local organic greens to the city, year-round. In 2015, they designed and created one of the first indoor aquaponics systems in Canada. In their closed-loop ecosystem, fish are fed organic feed; the waste is converted to nutrients through naturally occurring bacteria (the solid waste is filtered out); the plants in turn ‘clean’ the water for the fish. No pesticides, herbicides or other agricultural chemicals can be used and they use 95% less water than traditional agriculture.
This urban farm is located 26km from The Big Carrot and is one of the first certified organic aquaponic farms in Canada by Global Trust. It is also the proud recipient of the 2015 Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence. They are also Oceanwise certified and grow the best Thai basil we’ve ever tasted!
