Ayurveda is the world’s oldest practice of medicine. It has incredible balancing and healing properties for the body. There are three bodily humours that make up ones constitution. This is the tridosha theory.

The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three doshas can be applied to the skin just like it applies to the body. There are specific skin types that fall into these Doshas.


Normal to Dry skin

Sometimes feels cold, fine delicate skin with tiny pores, tans easily. When unbalanced the skin can become dry and flaky, rough and become prone to conditions such as fine lines, psoriasis and eczema.


Sensitive skin

Sensitive to heat, have warm pink glowing cheeks, lightly freckled or dotted with beauty marks and can easily burn. When unbalanced pitta skin types are prone to T zone sensitivity, broken capillaries and conditions such as rosacea and hot eczema.


Normal to Oily Skin

Smooth and thick skin, sometimes pale and cool to the touch. When imbalanced can be damp and oily prone to blackheads and can become congested this can lead to cystic acne and wet eczema.

Following a good facial regime is helpful in keeping the skin balanced and free from any of the above ailments.

Facial Regiments to help with specific doshas:


Cleansing is crucial to keeping the skin balanced and clean. For a Vata skin type using a hydrating non-stripping cleansing gel or milk is preferable. This will help get rid of dirt and pore clogging debris left from the day so that your moisturizer can do its job properly.

Some examples of good cleansers for Vata skin would be Mont Echo Cream Cleanser and Living Libations Sea Buckthorn Best Skin Ever.

Next step for the skin would be to use a hydrating toner. It is optional however because this skin type tends to have smaller pores so using a moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp, will still work well. Some great toners would be Suki Nourishing Toner and Evan Healy Rosewater, both of which are super hydrating.

The third but last step would be to properly moisturize the skin with nourishing cream. The best cream for a Vata skin type would be one that will moisturize and feed the skin. Evan Healy’s Rose Vetiver Moisturizer or Dr. Hauschka Moisturizing Day Cream would work well.

A good weekly moisturizing treatment would be John Masters Hydrating Facial Mask, and Pretty Rose Petal and Oatmeal Mask.


Using a gentle non-abrasive cleanser would work best for this sensitive skin type. Since Pitta skin types can be normal to sensitive finding a cleanser that is good for your skin in particular is important. Some really good cleansers for a Pitta skin type are Cocoon Petal Purity and Weleda Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion.

It is important to use a non-irritating toner. Floral waters and even aloe gel are very soothing and hydrating for a Pitta skin type. Some great toners include Pretty Roman Chamomile Floral Water, Anointment Rose Toner and Awaken My Sense Sensitive Skin Toner.

Moisturizing is key for keep Pitta skin balanced properly, this helps with keeping it protected and nourished. Using  a moisturizer specifically for sensitive skin is key. Mychelle Sensitive Pure Harmony Cream and Sigrid Nurture Cream work really well for Pitta skin types.

Also recommended is a weekly treatment for hydrating such as a mask. Dr. Hauschka Soothing Mask and Andalou Rose Water Mask are soothing and hydrating.


Cleansing is most important for the Kapha skin type because it is prone to oil and blackheads. Keeping skin clean helps in preventing it from becoming clogged and oily which can lead to acne. Some really good cleansers for Kapha skin Shea All Natural facial wash and Lavera Cleansing Gel.

Toning is also important for Kapha skin since it prone to oil and acne. Using a toner with astringent properties helps clean away any deposits left behind by the cleanser and helps keep the pores clean. Toners suitable for Kapha skin include Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Toner and Andalou Pore Minimizer Toner.

Moisturizing is also very important to help keep Kapha skin balanced and clear. This will help hydrate the skin properly to keep it balanced. It also reduces oil production. Recommended moisturizers for this skin type are Mychelle Oil Free Grapefruit Moisturizer and Andalou Oil Free Clarifying Moisturizer.

A good weekly treatment is a deep cleansing mask to help eliminate blackheads and clogged pores. Adama Mineral Deep Pore Mask and Cocoon Ancient Mud Mask.
