This month Cook this Book is honouring of all the moms and moms-to-be out there – Happy Mother’s Day!  We’re celebrating all you awesome ladies with Sprout Right: Nutrition from Tummy to Toddler by Lianne Phillipson-Webb.

This is a fantastic resource that will get you through the adventures of pregnancy, answer all your newborn queries and advance you into the toddler years with confidence. Let’s check it out!

The What: Sprout Right is my favourite resource to recommend to new parents. It is a comprehensive yet very accessible guide for mom and baby. The book clearly explains how pregnant women can support their bodies throughout pregnancy, after birth and while breastfeeding. It outlines the nutritional needs of babies from early stages of development all the way through to toddler years and covers the important topics of formula feeding, digestion, allergies and the immune system. Sprout Right also includes meal plans and recipes for mom and baby from pregnancy and beyond.

The Who: Lianne Phillipson Webb is a registered nutritionist and mom of two. She runs her nutrition business, Sprout Right, out of the west end of Toronto and speaks around the city. Lianne’s work is well researched and provides great scientific detail without overwhelming her audience. She speaks and writes from experience and with humour and practicality.

The Why: It is crucial for babies to develop a strong immune system at a young age and this is done primarily through the gut. Sprout Right offers fantastic information from a holistic perspective. I wish more parents and doctors offices had this book on hand!

The Eats: Sprout Right provides recipes and feeding tips for various stages of development. First come purees at 6-9 months, then chunkier meals from 9-12 months and then toddler nutrition from 12 months and beyond.  Meals are simple, nutritionally dense and most importantly – tasty and appealing! The apple crumble recipe is a favourite for toddlers and Moms!
