We are committed to the health and wellbeing of our staff and our community. During this uncertain time, we want to make sure you know what measures we have put in place to respond to coronavirus (COVID-19) and what changes to expect when shopping with us in store.

We will continue to update this page so you have access to the most up to date operational changes. Please check in regularly. Thank you for your trust in us.

We have made changes to our hours of operation to adequately staff other areas of our store, support our staff and keep food on the shelves:

Special Shopping Hours: The first hour of operations at each store will be dedicated to the elderly members of our community or those who are immune compromised.

**We are temporarily going cashless. Please bring a credit or debit card to pay. This is for the protection of you and our cashiers. Thanks for your cooperation.

** To discourage high customer volume we are temporarily suspending our 10X Points Day and Senior’s Day. We look forward to organizing customer appreciation days in the near future.

A note from our Operations Manager:

I would like to start by thanking our frontline staff for their tremendous hard work as they keep The Big Carrot stocked, sanitized and ready to serve you. We acknowledge the magnitude of our role in both providing an essential service to our community and protecting our staff and customers as we do so. We will continue to be nimble and adjust our operations accordingly. We appreciate in advance your flexibility as we navigate these unprecedented times together.

Here is what we have done to date:

– We are actively monitoring credible, evidence-based sources of information relating to the Coronavirus and continue to provide staff with timely updates and information

– Food Safety and sanitation are always a priority. We have increased our regular cleaning schedule of common areas and have doubled down on disinfecting all high contact surfaces including the carts and cart handles, all doorknobs and door handles including in the washrooms, fridge and freezer handles, phones, pin pads, equipment etc.

– While we always expect our staff to follow proper hand washing protocols it is now mandatory to wash hands every 30 minutes and designated hand washing stations are being provided to ensure this can happen

– Gloves are being used where required according to Public Health guidelines. Any staff member choosing to wear gloves is required to do so properly and training materials have been provided

– All cashiers are equipped with hand sanitizer and required to use it between every transaction

– We are providing disposable gloves for people to handle produce

– The number of customers allowed in the store at one time will be limited. This will be implemented when necessary

– We have temporarily closed the hot and cold bar. We will instead be offering an expanded selection of prepackaged options to keep you healthy. Soups will be available behind the deli counter

– We are packaging breads, muffins & cookies

– We are using only gravity bins in bulk and will be packaging other bulk top sellers

– We have paused our weekly Speaker Series and all staff meetings

– We have paused all passive sampling and demos

– We have temporarily suspended the use of reusable containers throughout the store and Juice Bar. Discounts will still be given to those who bring a reusable container

– We have removed all seating areas from the main store and juice bar

– We have moved reusable cutlery to behind the deli counter so that a staff member can assist you

– We have removed open product testers from our Wellness department

– We have temporarily suspended product returns to safeguard our staff and customers as well as encourage people to shop responsibly and avoid panic buying

Given all these changes- many things remain unchanged, most notably:

We will be here for you to keep you nourished with good wholesome food

We will always put public safety before commerce

There will be no changes to our margins

What we ask of you:

– Please do not come to the store if you are unwell. Send a friend if you can.

– Please use the hand sanitizer and gloves we have made available

– Pay with a card not cash and bag your own groceries if you BYO Bag

– Shop one cart apart! Distance yourself from other shoppers and staff

– Shop responsibly for what you may need. If you don’t need it in the next two weeks please leave it for someone who does. We continue to restock daily.

Protecting Our Staff

Our people are our priority. We are committed to the health & safety of our staff and customers. During this unprecedented time we continue to review safety measures daily. Safety protocols and procedures are based on Public Health recommendations and reliable science-based information. You’ve said it, we agree: frontline staff are the true heroes! Here are some of the ways we are supporting our hard working people:

– Designated hand washing stations so staff can adhere to mandatory hand washing every 30 minutes

– Gloves being used as per Public Health guidelines (cashiers are not required but can use gloves if they prefer or at a customer’s request)

– Cashiers equipped with hand sanitizer to be used between every transaction (along with regular hand washing)

– Following the recommendations of Toronto Public Health, masks are optional at this time but staff members can wear them if they choose

– In the near future, we will be installing plexiglass shields for all cash registers. We are also pursuing another PPE alternative that will provide protection for all of our frontline staff beyond the cash registers. We are in queue as our health system takes precedence at this critical time.

– The wellbeing of our team is of the utmost importance to us. Free counseling and coaching services are available to all staff and supportive policies are in place for those employees unable to come into work.
