Herb of the Month: St John’s Wort

St John’s Wort is a wild herb with yellow star-shaped flowers that has been used medicinally for centuries. It is named after Saint John the Baptiste as it blooms around June 24th, which is Saint John the Baptiste Day. The flowers, when crushed, have a red stain that comes through in the prepared oil.

Clinical studies have proven it to be a proper up-lifter & nervine used for anxiety and mild to moderate depression. Many people reach for this herb to get them through the dark winter months and in times of emotional upheaval. It is not only used for ‘internal emotional pain’ but for external as well. You can topically apply St John’s Wort oil for any nerve or muscle pain. Excellent to use on the neck for upper body tension and muscle spasms. Due to its anti-bacterial properties, you will often find this ingredient in first aid salves for minor cuts, burns and abrasions. It is a potent anti-inflammatory, expectorant and anti-viral. St John’s Wort is the perfect herb for any medicine cabinet and to reach for in the fall and winter months.
