Fair Trade

The Big Carrot is committed to carrying Fair Trade products that support social justice and fair labour. We only sell Fair Trade Certified, Organic coffee (bag, bulk or freshly brewed) as well as bananas and cane sugar. In addition to these categories we offer hundreds of products throughout the store that carry one of the third party verifications for fair trade including: teas, chocolates, shea butter, soaps, tropical fruit, quinoa, spices and soy sauce.

Our in-store banana tree is a reminder to support Fair Trade. By eating one more fair trade banana a week we can achieve our goal of doubling last year’s contribution to the to the APPBOSA banana cooperative in Valle Del Chira in Peru. A contribution of this kind can contribute to fair living wages or investments in farm upgrades like a cableway where the farmers no longer have to carry bunches of bananas on their backs from the tree to the packing station. The cableway takes the strain, improving efficiency and cutting costs. The new system also increases the percentage of non-blemished fruit suitable for export.  Learn more about fair trade bananas and the APPBOSA banana cooperative.

Fair Trade Principles

  • Fair price: Democratically organized farmer groups receive a guaranteed minimum floor price and an additional premium for certified organic products. Farmer organizations are also eligible for pre-harvest credit.

  • Fair labour conditions: Workers on Fair Trade farms enjoy freedom of association, safe working conditions, and living wages. Forced child labour is strictly prohibited.

  • Direct trade: With Fair Trade, importers purchase from Fair Trade producer groups as directly as possible, eliminating unnecessary middlemen and empowering farmers to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

  • Democratic and transparent organizations: Fair Trade farmers and farm workers decide democratically how to invest Fair Trade revenues.

  • Community development: Fair Trade farmers and farm workers invest Fair Trade premiums in social and business development projects like scholarship programs, quality improvement trainings, and organic certification.

  • Environmental sustainability: Harmful agrochemicals and GMOs are strictly prohibited in favour of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers’ health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations.

" The joyful food revolution: It is a movement that brings together people who love to eat good food and want to make a difference today for a healthier tomorrow. It is about connecting the dots between the food we eat and where it comes from. It's about building vibrant sustainable communities through respect for the people who make the food and the land that provides it."
