Sustainable Seafood

At The Big Carrot, our Sustainable Seafood Commitment offers our customers peace of mind - knowing that all of our fresh, frozen seafood and tinned salmon and tuna fall under the "Best Choice” and "Good Alternative" SeaChoice rankings. We do not carry any seafood ranked as "Avoid" by SeaChoice. This means that throughout the store our seafood is caught or harvested in environmentally sensitive ways that avoid habitat destruction and wasteful by-catch, that stock are sufficiently strong and not threatened by overfishing. Click on the pocket guide to learn more about SeaChoice rankings.

We partner with SeaChoice, Canada’s leading National sustainable seafood program, to make it easier than ever for our shoppers to enjoy sustainably-caught seafood. This partnership also supports our ability to maintain complete and transparent information about all of our seafood products.

Look for our easily identifiable labels that correspond to the SeaChoice sustainable seafood pocket guide as well as any information you need to make an informed choice such as method and location of catch.

Canada’s Seafood Guide and Sushi Guide app is now available for free download at the iTunes store.

Six-point Seafood Sustainability Policy

As part of our collaboration with SeaChoice, The Big Carrot has implemented a six-point seafood sustainability policy that addresses our commitment, data collection, transparency, education, and reform. Below are some of the highlights:

Procurement:

a)    only procure fresh and frozen seafood from sustainable sources - green or yellow ranked by SeaChoice

b)    only procure canned tuna and salmon from sustainable sources - green or yellow ranked by SeaChoice

c)    Maintain a procurement policy for all other canned seafood where none is sourced from Red-‘Avoid’ ranked fisheries or aquaculture by SeaChoice.

Data collection:

a)    provide detailed information about the seafood we supply including: item codes, species names, country of origin, gear type and production methods in regards to sustainability rankings.

Transparency:

a)    Providing consumers detailed information on farmed and wild seafood products.

b)    Provide clear and accurate product labeling information for consumers.
