Licorice Spiced Buckwheat Hot Cereal
Ingredients
1/3 cup buckwheat flakes (substitute rolled oats if preferred)
¾- 1 cup filtered water
¼ tsp sea salt
1 tsp powdered licorice root*
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon powder
¼ tsp cardamom powder
2 tsp unpasteurized honey
3 Tbsp coconut butter (not oil)
Nuts, seeds, or berries for toppings, if desired
Method
Add buckwheat flakes, ¾ cup water (you can add more later if needed), licorice root powder, salt, vanilla, and spices to a small saucepan and heat over medium-low. Stir frequently.
When flakes become soft and water has mostly absorbed (about 5-10 minutes), add honey and coconut butter. You can also choose to add more water at this time to achieve desired consistency. Once the coconut butter has melted, remove from heat.
Serve in a bowl and top with choice of nuts, seeds, shredded coconut flakes, and/or chopped fruit/berries.
*In all of the licorice recipes, I used the Clef des Champs Organic Licorice Root Powder, available at the Wholistic Dispensary at the Big Carrot.
